My Work
MGEDIT
Although I am now retired, I continue to have an interest in science editing and writing and the role of science and new communications technologies in development. These pages summarize my work from 1990 as an international consultant (MGEDIT), with work experience in Canada, the United States, and many developing nations in Africa and South and Southeast Asia.
Science Editing and Writing: Specialized in substantive editing of scientific and technical books and conference proceedings; developed user manuals for software applications; and wrote about science and technology. Writing included reorganization and creation of websites. Editorial consultancies included significant work in biology and life sciences.
Program and Project Evaluation: Planned and implemented evaluations that assess the impact of information and communications technologies on development activities. Evaluations obtained user feedback on current activities and were used to plan future project and program directions.
Website Design: Redesigned and edited corporate websites. Projects included restructuring and editing both internal and external corporate sites.

Previous Work Experience
For 15 years (1974–1990), I held positions of increasing responsibility in the Communications Division, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Ottawa, Canada. As Associate Director, Management and Administration, I developed and managed an annual program of work with a $7 million budget; developed policies and procedures; coordinated all personnel management; represented the division on administrative, financial, and policy committees; and coordinated divisional communication with six regional offices in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. My earlier responsibilities within the Communications Division included: Technical Editor; Head, Technical Editing Unit; Regional Liaison Officer (Singapore); Program Officer; and Dissemination Officer. During my time with IDRC, I had the pleasure to work and travel extensively in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Before joining IDRC, I worked for 2.5 years as a copy editor and controlled all phases of production of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, the Canadian Geotechnical Journal, and the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering at the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Canada. This where I learned about printing and book production, back in the days when the journals were typeset using linotype and monotype (hot metal), and photo typesetting was in its infancy.
